Editor's Notebook

It's the wonderful winter season. There are a few things to see, games to attend and games to win! It's an exciting season between basketball, swimming, and track. If you ever have a free afternoon, come and watch a game. School support is the reason we do so well. As you watch the games being played, there is something to keep in mind: it's for the love of the game.

The Coach Speaks
By: Coach Thomson

"As of January 6, the Boys Varsity Basketball Team is sitting atop the Queens II-A division with a 7-1 record. However, some disappointing non-league losses give the Beavers a dismal 9-8 record. The team hopes to keep their consecutive play-off appearances intact and bring home the Queens II-A title along the way. Captain Yves Keslin, co-captains Kevin St. Pierre, Brandon Lawley and key new-comer Desmond Frazier have been leading the way."

The Great Turning
By: Mikhail Stewart

"The boys basketball looks like a [good] team" a Jamaica student commented before their first game. But after a loss that left the players as stunned as the fans, it was an obvious sign that they were doing badly because they started comparing their home team to the Knicks. But after the first game, there was a change of morale. As Gregory Dwyer put it, "I think we are starting to get the kinks out and starting to play like a team. This type of team play along with a five game streak makes starter Desmond Frazier think that "we as a team have some weaknesses, but overall we can still go and win the city." While watching them play, they got me to believe. > > > TOP

Despite the team's small size, the girls indoor track team has still been able to put a lot of effort into what they do. Lacher Coombs says that the girls track team "is very dedicated" and that "they are not only dedicated to the team, but to their schoolwork." The girls share a firm sense of friendship. Jodi-Ann and Christabelle can be seen talking to each other and having fun, just like the rest of the members. The team is kept on track by two varsity athletes Syrece Bredwood and Lacher Coombs. Their coach, Mr. Delva, can be seen encouraging the girls to do their best even if it hurts! He was not available to comment, but his work, determination and effort can be seen in the success of the girls track team. > > > TOP

Boys Varsity Swimming
Boys Varsity Swimming

"Spirits are high." said Coach Blankfield about his varsity boys swim team. Though many of the boys are free-spirited, it's an amazement that the boys are in the middle of their division. With three wins and two losses, and three more games to play, the boys are making great strides to end their season with a bang. As senior captain Mikhail Stewart once said, "we all have rough times, but everyone steps up to try to give us the win."

Boys Indoor Track Team

Jamaica's Boys: Indoor Track
By: Eddie Argueta

With a couple of meets left in the season, the boys indoor track team can be seen practicing hard around our school. While the coach, Mr. Crosland, says he enjoys working with the hardworking members of the team, he does regret that the season has not been as enjoyable as planned. However, he still feels that their efforts will not be in vain. The captain, Jermaine Jordan, has confidence in his team and himself as he said that the "teammates feed on each others' success," which makes them strive to do better than each other. It "causes you to win races and feel good," the captain also stated. He also offered this tip: "When running, you have to remember to never give up, keep pushing until you finish the race". Mervin Castor had this to say, "each of us on the team as individuals cannot accomplish anything, but together we conquer all." He describes the force that drives these athletes to do their best as a team. Coach Crosland also wanted "all athletes or wannabe athletes" to know that "track is a great way to stay in shape and stay conditioned. Try it!" > > > TOP

Physical Education: The Basketball Tournament

Basketball is a great sport, there is no doubt about it. It seems to be a favorite here at Jamaica High School. During periods three and eight, Mr. Gregov and Mr. Alsofrom teach a basketball class. They are currently having a tournament. There is a reasonable amount of competition, which is always one of the ingredients of a great game. For period three, Teams 1 and 3 are tied with four wins. Team 1 consists of Wallace, Bryant, Amini, Challenger, Labonte and Walden. For Team 3, there is Jones, Hammon, Marlin, Newton, and Howard. For either period, Team 6 is in the lead with 4 wins as well. Team 6 is made up of Obiasi, J. Joseph, Harris, Dickerson and Mays. This is no small thing; these guys have game. Do you want to play?
