JAMAICA HIGH
SCHOOL
ACADEMY OF FINANCE
The Academy of Finance of New York City, a part of the National Academy Foundation, is an educational program that prepares students through coursework, summer internships, and special events for careers in the finance industry. Jamaica High School sponsors a four-year program for some of the brightest students in the school.
The centerpiece of the program is the summer internship that the students participate in during the summer between their junior and senior years. Students are responsible for writing and interviewing for positions that the Academy finds for qualified students.
Students are placed in many of the top financial firms in the city where they are expected to work a full day for six to eight weeks while they learn about the finance industry and the world of work.
During the second semester of their senior year, qualified students can also enroll in a college level Finance class at Baruch College that the Academy of Finance pays for. The students who pass the class earn three college credits that can be transferred to the university of their choice.
In addition to these two unique opportunities, the Academy of Finance also sponsors many programs and events during the year for students. Each year the students can participate in Toastmasters, a public speaking program, the Academy of Finance Annual Conference, Shareholders' meetings, and other special events that occur frequently throughout the school year.
