LAURA KIRCHMAN MANUELIDIS, '59
After graduating from Sarah Lawrence College with a B. A. in Poetry Dr. Manuelidis attended Yale University School of Medicine, from which she received an M.D. with a specialization in Neurosciences.
She is currently (since 1989) Professor and Head of Neuropathology in the Neurosciences Faculty at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Manuelidis reports that she "Basically did fundamental early work on DNA and chromosome structure, and from the 1970s moved increasingly into dementia research, especially Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (related to "mad cow disease")." [She is also a] "Consultant for The Department of Health and Human Services of Congress and [tries] to help with public education on areas in [her] expertise." She also notes that her "mother taught at JHS..."
Dr. Manuelidis has published many articles in scientific journals, is on the editorial boards of several of them, has appeared as a guest commentator on international television and radio, has been an invited speaker and guest lecturer on numerous occasions, is a consultant for the US Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health, is a grant reviewer for research agencies in the US, England, Canada and NATO and is an active member and office holder of many professional organizations in her field.
Through all of this Dr. Manuelidis has continued to write poetry, with occasional publication and readings of her work.
