POLICY ON VALEDICTORIAN AND SALUTATORIAN

The students selected as Valedictorian and Salutatorian should be reflective of truly outstanding scholarship in the academic programs that Jamaica High School offers, and display a high degree of citizenship in the Jamaica High School Community. Accordingly, the following criteria are to be followed in selecting these students:

I. SELECTION:

Both the Valedictorian and Salutatorian must be candidates for a Regents Diploma. The Valedictorian should be the student with the highest cumulative weighted academic average by the end of the SEVENTH TERM. The Salutatorian should be the student with the second highest cumulative weighted average by the end of the SEVENTH TERM. Both the Valedictorian and Salutatorian must display a high degree of citizenship in the Jamaica High School Community.

II. TIE:

When two or more students have achieved the same highest average and are ranked number one, they shall act as co-Valedictorians. When two or more students have achieved the same second highest average and are ranked number two, they shall act as co-Salutatorians.

III. ELIGIBILITY:

To be eligible for either Valedictorian or Salutatorian, a student must complete at least 20 credits of graded work at Jamaica High School by the end of the SEVENTH TERM.
