PBS VIDEO DATABASE OF AMERICAN HISTORY AND CULTURE
ALPHABETICAL LISTS OF VIDEOTAPES AND AUDIOTAPES

GENERAL GUIDELINES

Videotapes (about 1000 tapes), CD/ROM information sources (about 300), and some audio-cassettes, which are included among the videotapes, are listed below in broad subject categories. They are available for loan for use by students or teachers at home or in the classroom. They may be reserved in advance: call x1402 or x1401. If no answer, leave a message on our voice mail. From outside the building dial 739-5942. VCRs, monitors, and tape players must be arranged through the academic departments. The library does not lend out this equipment. We can demonstrate videotapes and CD/ROMs - BY APPOINTMENT. There are computers available for independent use of CD/ROMS in the library. Teachers may arrange with a librarian to bring a class to the Reference Room to view a videotape there.

Also listed are 69 videotapes stored in the Teachers' Center (marked:TC), and 32 videotapes stored in the English Department (marked:ED).

To help teachers of different subjects identify useful materials, each videotape may be listed in more than one subject area. However, each CD/ROM is listed in only one of the subject areas. Therefore teachers looking for useful CD/ROMS in one subject area may want to look over the listings in other subject areas to discover useful materials. Examples of such materials are the History Through Art CD/ROM series and the History and Culture of... series, both listed under Social Studies.

Students are permitted to borrow materials listed here if they agree on a specific date of return, usually in 1 or 3 days. This will insure that materials are not forgotten and that more students have an opportunity to use them.

FINDING INFORMATION ABOUT MOVIES

Questions about movies come up often. Which actors starred in which version of Hamlet? What year did Frank Capra direct It's a Wonderful Life? What other films did he direct? In which production of Julius Caesar did Marlon Brando play the role of Marc Antony? Answers to questions like these can be found on the web in the Internet Movie Database. Click on this link to get to the IMDB. When your browser opens the IMDB, plug in the name of the movie you want to know about in the box in the upper left hand corner that says Search the database for. You should be able to find all of the movies listed below. The IMDB will give you a short, or long, plot outline, a review by Leonard Maltin, memorable quotes, a list of the complete cast and the role each actor played, runtime and other information which may help teachers and students prepare lessons or assignments. Of course, the short educational documentaries will not be covered by the IMDB. Some of these may be found in the web site for The Library Video Company which offers descriptive information about many short stories, biographies and other videos, including those produced by Schlessinger Media and Schlessinger Science Library. Still another source of information is Films for Humanities which includes links to the BBC Educational Collection and Cambridge Educational films.

NOTES ON USING VIDEOTAPES IN THE CLASSROOM

We strongly urge teachers to preview tapes they plan to use in class. While we have selected these tapes from vendors' lists which claim to offer material suitable for high school students, we can not guarantee that they actually are suitable because we have not screened and evaluated each one. As you may know, works of literature that are suitable for high school in the original edition are sometimes changed in the screen version in a way that makes them clearly unsuitable for use in your lessons for high school students.

Many of the films on this list have been rated by The Motion Picture Association of America, (MPAA) which recommends voluntary compliance so that children are not exposed to films that are inappropriate for them. The ratings appear on the tape packaging and on the tape's label. Some of the films have been assigned an "R" rating, which means they are "Restricted," i. e., "children under 17 require an accompanying parent or adult guardian." Some others are labelled (by the publisher) "Not Rated." This means that if they were rated, the rating could be "R" or any of the other possible ratings.

In 1996, the National Association of Broadcasters, the National Cable Television Association and the Motion Picture Association of America established voluntary TV ratings. These ratings are displayed on your television screen for the first 15 seconds at the beginning of each hour of a program. They are also indicated on the packaging of DVD and videotape versions of shows that were made for television broadcast. These ratings are: TV G, TV PG, TV 14, TV MA and may include a letter suffix for violence (V), sexual situations (S), coarse language (L), or suggestive dialogue (D) in varying degrees. These ratings are explained on this PBS site.

Teachers must use their judgement when using an "R" rated film (or any film) in a lesson and be prepared to skip over any sections that they consider inappropriate or objectionable to students, parents or guardians. Don't embarrass yourself by using a film that you thought would fit into your lesson but which you didn't actually preview. It takes more time but it's time well spent.

Keep in mind also the great variety of ways that audio-visual material can be used. For instance, selected portions of a long video may be shown as part of a lesson, instead of the whole of a long tape. Remember: "The videotape is not the lesson." Teachers agree that simply showing a videotape for the entire period is usually not appropriate or effective as a teaching method. Showing short segments of long tapes to stimulate discussion or writing activities or to illustrate a particular point will be much more effective.

Teachers can help make this collection more useful. First, of course, rewind the tapes after you use them. Return tapes and CDs in the boxes or cases in which you received them. If you find homeless videotapes lying about in your classrooms, offices or at home, they may belong to the library. Please send them to us.

CD/ROM DATA SOURCES

"M" or "W" in parentheses indicates that the disk will run on "M"acintosh computers or on MS/DOS computers running "W"indows (3.1 or '95 or '98). Printed documentation of the program is usually limited to the jewel case booklets, though there are usually "readme" files on the disk. Such CD/ROMs are usually intended for individual use. CD/ROMs for use by groups are typically accompanied by more detailed suggestions for teachers. Those cases have been noted.

ART: VIDEOS

Against the Odds: The Artists of the Harlem Renaissance. PBSVDBAHC. Volume 2. See the little-known story of the visual artists who made the Harlem Renaissance one of the most important artistic events in the 20th century. Rich archival footage, including newsreels and photographs, recalls the influential force of the exhibitions, the vibrancy of Harlem in the Roaring Twenties, and the many significant personalities that shaped the movement, such as William E. Harmon, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Alain Locke. Discover how African-American artists triumphed over formidable odds. Produced by NJN, The New Jersey Channel, 1994.

Art & Power: 1937 (30m) The story of Nazi perversion of art.

Benton, Thomas Hart. PBSVDBAHC. Volume 222. His paintings were burly, energetic and as uncompromising as the midwestern landscapes and laborers they celebrated. This film uses long-lost footage, penetrating interviews and the magnificent art of Benton to tell the bittersweet story of an extraordinary American artist who became emblematic of the price all artists must pay to remain true to their talents and themselves. Produced by Ken Burns and Julie Dunphey, 1989.

Creativity: Photographer's Eye (29m)
Creativity: World Of Norman Lear (Parts. I, II) (29m, 29m)
D. W.
Griffith (15m)

Frank Lloyd Wright. PBSVDBAHC. Volume 281. Wright and Olgivanna began the Taliesin Fellowship, taking on apprentices who would "learn by doing." With Fallingwater Wright regained critics' acclaim with Wright masterfully employing modern principles and materials in an organic relationship to the landscape. His Usonian houses, on the otherhand, provided high-quality housing designed to be mass-produced for under $5,000. In 1937, the Fellowship began its annual pilgrimage to the Arizona desert. Here he built Taliesin West, the desert camp where the Fellowship would spend its summers. The post-war boom was Wright's most productive phase. He designed provocative and controversial buildings that ranged from a service station to a synagogue. In his design for the Solomon R. Guggenheim museum the spiral-ramped museum was not only effective; it was breathtaking. In 1959, six months before the completion of the Guggenheim, Wright died.

American Photography, A Century of Images. PBSVDBAHC Series. Three videotapes:

The Developing Image. Volume 314. Early in the 20th century, the 'Brownie'--the first affordable camera for the masses--was introduced. Over the next three decades, photographs are taken and used in myriad ways: to capture the vanishing Native American way of life in the West, to study and refine the way we work, to highlight social causes that require our attention, as a propaganda tool in the waging of war, to sell products, create media celebrities out of athletes and actors, and provide objective data in the advancement of science. Photography is slowly integrating itself into the fabric of our lives.

The Photographic Age. Volume 315. The Golden Age of photography begins as the Associated Press institutes a new 'wire' system of photo distribution. Suddenly, photos of an event half way around the world are seen everywhere at the same time. Photography affects the media in other ways as well, with the advent of LIFE, the first large format magazine, and tabloids. During the Great Depression, photos are used to 'sell' New Deal programs. Images made in WWII are another kind of propaganda tool: highly censored, they present a glorious, sanitized view of war. In the 1950s photographs are used to demonstrate how we are all members of "The Family of Man," and to jumpstart the civil rights movement.

Photography Transformed. Volume 316. America changed profoundly in the 1960s and cameras were there to capture it all. From the civil rights movement, anti-war movement, Vietnam, and the space program - photographers had unprecedented access to it all, and the media was willing to bring all the chaos of the era to the masses. With the advances in technology, photography became an increasingly powerful tool in criminology. Breakthrough digital technology promises both benefits and drawbacks for photography at the end of the 20th century. Though we live in a high-tech world, the enduring power of the still photograph remains.

Lift Every Voice - I'LL MAKE ME A WORLD SERIES. PBSVDBAHC. Volume 290 The series' opening hour looks at the trials and triumphs of the first generation of African-American artists born to freedom. Bert Williams and George Walker forge careers as vaudeville stars. Performing within a racist minstrel tradition, they nonetheless make a living as black artists, infusing minstrelsy with genuine elements of black culture. In New Orleans, talented musicians create the innovative and exuberant sounds of ragtime and jazz, music that comes to be identified as quintessentially American. And a powerful new medium--film--allows Oscar Micheaux to make motion pictures that present the complexities of African-American life at a time when many white filmmakers were promoting dangerous racial stereotypes. Produced by Blackside, Inc. Film and Television Productions, 1998.

That Rhythm, Those Blues. PBSVDBAHC. Volume 14. In the small towns and cities of the South in the 1940s and 1950s, black rhythm and blues singers performed in warehouses, tobacco barns, movie theaters, and halls. The endless one-night stands, makeshift housing, and inadequate transportation were all steps toward the big time at the famed Apollo Theatre in Harlem. It was here that the most talented and most recognized black performers played swing, jazz, and soul--the innovative music styles of the time. This is the story of camaraderie tested by racial tension and of the great financial and artistic success of rhythm and blues. Produced by George T. Nierenberg, 1988.

While targeted at Grades 5 to 8, because of the full-color live action and the option for using the Closed-Captioning text on the screen, this series may also be an effective teaching aid for bilingual instruction or for non-native-English-speaking students catching up in higher grades.
