JAMAICA HIGH SCHOOL WEBWRITER'S NOTES

Webwriter:
7/05 - pres: Ellen Frank, Librarian, Jamaica High School.
9/98 - 6/05: Dennis F. Jensen, Librarian, Jamaica High School (Now retired.)

The HOMEPAGE and the other web pages on this website were designed to be as simple and easy to use as possible while still being graphically interesting and also meeting the requirements of the Department of Education for school web pages. Users of this web site and these web pages should also be aware of and abide by the Department of Education's Rules for Internet Acceptable Use.

THE PURPOSE of this website is to enable the library to continue to deliver information to students and teachers in the most efficient way currently possible: in recent years that has meant over the Internet. With this website we have enabled students to search periodical databases and other compilations of data in the library and even from their computers at home or in other libraries. We have also provided teachers with a forum for communicating educational information to their students and for displaying student work. In the course of developing this site we have also responded to the needs of various school departments, parents, students and alumni by adding appropriate pages.

Because of the lack of standardization among Internet browsers and the great variety of settings possible on individual computers, the pages on this site may not appear on every user's screen as they were designed to appear. Users who would like to view these pages as they were designed to be viewed should be aware of the following and may wish to adjust their computer settings accordingly.

THE HOMEPAGE was originally designed to fit on the screen without any scrolling necessary. On some browsers and with the text size set small enough, the scroll bar may disappear completely. If the user has opted to display on the screen large icons or other toolbars or a large text size, some scrolling may be necessary.

BROWSERS CONSIDERED IN PAGE DESIGN: INTERNET EXPLORER 6.00.26 displays the pages, especially the homepage, as they were designed. NETSCAPE 4.37 and 6.02 give the pages an acceptable appearance with some exceptions. Both versions do not show the bar separators on the left of the homepage as dark blue bars but only as transparent horizontal rules. Netscape 6.02 does not display the "ALT" text for the three images in the lower left corner and does not support "BLINK" for the letters "PTA" on the left side of the homepage. (Since this was first written new versions of browsers have been released which may have eliminated some of the differences. DFJ, 9/10/07.)

MONITOR SETTING: resolution of 800/600 pixels, maximum colors. Settings of greater resolution will cause text and images to appear smaller than intended. Text that appears smaller may be difficult to read. Settings of less dense resolution will cause text and pages to appear larger than intended and will result in disruption of the display of the page because of text and image wrap-around.

FONT SETTINGS: Because of the hundreds of different combinations of font settings possible and the great variation of personal taste, it is extremely likely that a particular user may be using a font setting different from the font used in the design of the page. Many of the possible fonts will work well on the page while many others will not. One acceptable font is Lucida Sans Typewriter, another is Albertus Medium, another is Ariel Rounded Bold. Generally, decorative fonts, cursive fonts and very bold or thick fonts do not work well. Further adjustments in font size can be made using "VIEW" from the top menu bar.

USAGE HISTORY:In this example statistics show a sharp upward trend in website usage and hits in the fall of 2004. See the chart and data tabulation below. (As of 12/12/04).
